To clear up the names --
Radeon VE is the first-generation Radeon core, card manufactured by ATi, and with a very low clock speed. Performance is mediocre. Radeon LE is the first-generation Radeon core, with DDR memory and decent performance. It was made by a third party but seems to work fine.
Anything else that is just "Radeon", "Radeon DDR", etc. is also an ATi-manufactured part, based on the first-generation core.
The Radeon 7200/7500/8500: The 7200 is a first-generation Radeon core at a higher clock and mated to SDRAM. The 7500 is a stripped-down version of the top-end 8500 and is available with SDRAM or DDR. The 8500 is the cream of the crop, although ATi is planning to split the 8500 into two models, a "mid-range" part and a "high-end" part. Some 7200/7500/8500 parts are made by ATi, some are made by third parties.
Buy what works for you but double-check Pricewatch, some of the newer cards are starting at prices within $10-20 of the old stuff.
