MP3 is the go now - but setop box and protable support is limited still.

Of course 6 channel AC3 will be home stuff and MP3 will be mobile. Not much good having 8 speakers in a set of head phones but it has been done. Front+Rear+centre+sub in each L&R HPhone.
Apparently the spatial is pretty cool but very $$$$
